In 2018, 6,507 lives were lost to suicide in the UK, three quarters of those deaths registered were male – a gender bias that has existed since the 1990s.

FAMH interact with Footballers and their families affected by this issue every day, and we can plainly see the pain so many people experience after losing a loved one through suicide. We highlight the scale of the issue and brutally illustrate that Footballers need further strategies to be put in place to help them cope with many issues faced in a professional Football career.  While great strides have been made around mental health through the FA & the PFA in recent years, this issue is not going away. Now more than ever, we must acknowledge this and act with urgency.

FAMH have researched in great depth and found that 102 professional football  players have taken their own lives dating back as far as 1908 and yet it is still happening today. It is with these statistics that we are campaigning for all GP surgeries to invite male patients to quarterly (every 3 months) mental health check up's just like they would with physical checks.
