Recently, incidents of assaults on emergency service personnel (paramedics, police officers, firefighters, volunteer rescue officers, correctional officers, and staff at A&E departments all over the country have sadly been very much on the increase.
These officers are here to help you. We are calling on mandatory minimum sentencing, increased maximum sentencing and truth in sentencing Australia wide for the offence of assaulting a public officer.
Currently, sentences range from mandatory minimum sentencing of 6 months prison time in WA up to a max of 14 years imprisonment in QLD. We're calling for mandatory minimum sentencing of 6 months imprisonment, and a maximum of 10 years imprisonment for more serious offences in each state or territory in Australia, together with a doubling of sentence up to the 20 years imprisonment for violent assaults against any emergency service personnel involving weapons (similar to the 14 years already in place in Queensland).
Faith is being lost in a judicial system that routinely "slaps these offenders on the wrist" and sends them home with a recommendation not to do it again. We need to raise public awareness that these assaults will no longer be tolerated in any way. These are serious offences carried out on people who's job is to save lives and protect the members of the public so as we can all go home safely at the end of the day and stay safe once they're there, and as such must carry serious punishment.
That punishment needs to be a mandatory sentence which has proven to be exceptionally effective in decreasing these assaults, together with an enforceable maximum sentence that will act as a deterrent to the perpetrators of these crimes.
In Western Australia, since implementation of mandatory sentencing, assaults against emergency service personnel have dropped by 27%. An emergency service personnel, we will stand by you in your time of need. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Anytime. Anywhere. Now we are asking you to please stand by us...
