Reconvert Olympic Villages into affordable housing
Currently, many big cities around the world struggle with an affordable housing crisis. While new appartments blocks or condominums are constantly built, the are often categorized as ''deluxe housing'' and targetted toward more fortunate people. Meanwhile, the middle and lower class struggle to find housing that is both affordable and sanitary. According to Statistic Canada, approximately 22% of households in the country are living in housing they cannot afford.(Statistics Canada. Table 46-10-0046-01 Households living with housing problems, by selected housing-vulnerable populations and core housing need including adequacy, affordability and suitability standards)
But, every two years, new Olympic Villages are built, and then abandonned and left to rot after the games. (https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/abandoned-olympic-venues-sites/) This year, for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 20 billions of dollars were spent to hold the event. Why should we leave these buildings to rot when we could reconvert them into social housing for the more vulnerable? Now, how many people could we save from homelessness with that investment? Reconverting the Olympic Venues could also be beneficial for the environment, as less ressources would end up being wasted. Finally, the cost for the governments would be low, as the buildings are already there, ready to house people.
With this petition, I wish to make people realize that this is a golden opportunity to make the world we live in a better place.
