Let eSports be considered a real sport #eSportsIsSport

Why isn’t eSports considered sports? I’m Holly, I’m 13 years old and I love gaming. As both a player and an avid fan a lot of my time is devoted to video games, in particular Overwatch. I’m sure many of you, especially of the older generation, will say that this is a ‘waste of time’ and that I should be doing something useful. So many people think this, including my dad. I try to explain that it is a complex strategic activity promoting teamwork and rapid descion making but he just laughs and says it’s ‘only a game’. What about football? That’s just a game, and personally I view it the same way people who disregard video games view them, a pointless activity where grown men run around and are paid ridiculous amounts of money for it. That doesn’t mean I don’t recognise it as a sport, and I do respect and understand the commitment and hard work it takes to reach that level. It’s the exact same with eSports. Pro gamers put hours and hours into the games, working on mechanical skills such as aim and gamesense, positioning and in the case of team based games synergy. Gaming teams are also incredibly supportive of each other and are often seen laughing, joking and having fun together during and outside of tournaments. The above picture shows Team EnVyUs, the first eSports team to go to Korea and win a tournament after months of extreme practice and immense skill. Gamers put in just as much effort and yet because it is a different type than people are used to, tactical knowledge and fast reflexes, too many simply right it off, ignoring the facts and statistics to show that it is just as popular as many ‘mainstream’ sports. Gaming teams are also incredibly supportive of each other and are often seen laughing, joking and having fun together during and outside of tournaments. The above picture shows Team EnVyUs, the first eSports team to go to Korea and win a tournament. Just one example is Overwatch League, most if not all streams reach over 100,000 viewers and this figure is even bigger for games such as playoffs. This is only the first season. I don’t know a lot about traditional sports but I doubt that they can all boast such impressive figures. It makes me sad and angry to see people insulting the things I love, so I want to give people like that a challenge; if you’re the type to insult video games and gamers why don’t you give them a try? Once you’ve seen what they’re like you may just change your mind. Hopefully one day our community will be recognised and although there is already talks of gaming in the 2024 Paris olympics, I hope this petition could help the committee see that gaming is a recognised and worthy sport (and on a personal note it would be amazing if Overwatch was there.) If we do get professional gamers into the Olympics then that would finally show that they do respect and admiration just as traditional atheletes already do. Thank you for reading and please take the time to share on social media with #eSportsIsSport
