I had to fly from london to Nigeria in December last year with my breast feeding baby and of course I would have to breast feed. I found myself breastfeeding on the plane in front of strangers and even though I tried to use a cover my baby removes it and cries. I asked if there was a place I could go to breast feed and was told unceremoniously to take my baby to the disabled toilet and feed him.

I felt so helpless so I took him to the toilet, however the stench and how cramped it was made me leave and go back to my seat. I breast fed him there with people watching without a care! Even though two ladies actually said to me I needed to go back to the toilet as it wasn’t fair on them to have to watch me.

my next trip saw me leave my baby for fear of the same thing, however I had to express milk. This time I wasn’t prepared to back down or expose myself if I didn’t feel like it. When I was told I had to use the toilet, I asked if they would eat in a toilet! After I kicked up a fuss and got the support of some mums. the air hostess took me to a place by the first class bar, with a comfortable chair. she drew a curtain and made me comfortable so I could express my baby’s milk. So there is room for us after all!

Early baby stages are hard enough and when we have to fly with our little ones being told to go to the toilet to feed them is unacceptable. Breastfeeding should be encouraged and we should be taken care of for doing our best for the next generation not marginalised! They say Breast is best, Breast feeding is important, but when it comes down to it the support for us is barely there when we need it. Taking care of our babies is priority and we won’t be shamed into unsanitary conditions to feed our babies. Help me make this a standard. We should have a facility for mums that aren’t brave enough or simply don’t want to pull their nipples out anywhere. We deserve privacy and comfort. Our babies deserve priority!
