It is very important to save the Sea Turtles because they have been around for more than 250 million years. They are important because they reflect the health of our oceans. If an ocean is healthy these animals thrive. On the other hand, if the ocean is not healthy and has polluted water or contaminated food sources, the number of sea turtles will decrease. It matters to us because they are beautiful creatures and also because we consume a lot of seafood. If the seafood we are consuming is contaminated, it might lead to serious illnesses for us. It also collapses the Ecosystem creating mass extinction and overpopulation of other animals.

Single-use plastics and microplastics are the biggest and most immediate threat to the Sea turtles because they confuse the sharp plastic with food and end up dying.  Plastic is everywhere and the percentage of plastic that is actually recycled is only 9%. Besides, the production and consumption of plastic are expected to grow by 300% by 2030.

You can contribute as well to save the turtles by recycling but try to reduce the use of plastics and if you live near the beach remember at night time to keep your lights off as much as possible or use blinds during the nesting season.  Other ways to contribute are to avoid at all cost buying products made of turtle shells and if possible, donate to sea turtle preservation organizations. If everyone makes small steps we can help these beautiful species to survive.
