Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA) is an internationally renowned arts school in Michigan and the institution's students have access to an abundance of resources when it comes to perfecting their arts, including many visitors who have found success in pursuing careers related to music, dancing, visual art, writing and the like.

Chris Thile, lauded MacArthur award-winning mandolinist and the host of NPR's Live From Here, is an excellent example of someone whose interdisciplinary and cross-genre endeavors (Such as 2004's Deceiver, a grammy-nominated experimental album released in which Thile recorded every track himself) would be a perfect match with Interlochen's diverse artistic setting. Yo-Yo Ma, an acclaimed cellist whose career has spanned over 50 years, has similarly collaborated with a wide span of artists and institutions (including the Silk Road ensemble and James Taylor) as well as performing pieces more familiar to those in the world of classical music. Bass player and composer Edgar Meyer, arguably one of the most well-known bassists in the world, is known for his various works in classical, bluegrass and jazz genres and frequent collaborations with the likes of Hilary Hahn, Béla Fleck and others. He is the artist-in-residence at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music.

The aforementioned trio of Thile, Ma and Meyer have collaborated multiple times on albums such as the grammy-award winning Goat Rodeo Sessions with Stuart Duncan, as well as a full album of Bach trios. Thile and Meyer also produced a 2014 album called Bass and Mandolin which also won two grammys.

While all three artists have accumulated fan bases who are established at IAA, and while all of the guests who come to perform at the school are immensely helpful to those who witness their shows/masterclasses, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, and Yo-Yo Ma are unique in the fact that they are not only very well known, but also able to extend their music and messages to a broader group of people due to their willingness to bend the rules and keep society's subliminal message of "stay in your lane" with a grain of salt with regard to their abilities to genre-hop and create a more accessible way for people and students to experience a wider variety of music in a more extensive set of applications.

In case the three artists need any more incentive to come visit, we've heard that the students and teachers are dedicated and enthusiastic, the campus is beautiful and most of all, there's lots of great Nebbiolo to be found in and around Traverse City.
