I am currently a graduating senior, within the biology department here at Norfolk State University. I am messaging you with an alarming issue our university is facing. We currently have a sitting provost who is adamant about pushing our university in a direction that I feel is in direct contradiction to the heritage and principles upon which it was founded. It was founded on the premise, that among the least of us, arise the best of us. Those who did not have the approval of society; those whose futures were deemed lesser by others, all had a place here at Norfolk State University. We come in, with some lacking direction; some lacking aspirations, and many desiring to change our lives and our communities. However, we leave, forging new brotherhoods and sisterhoods, promises of brighter futures, and a pride in ourselves and alma mater that rivals the greatest universities in the world. Under the direction of the interim provost, that heritage is being compromised for technical education--terminal degrees that, according to her, dictate excellence, all while reducing education to a degree, and not the colorful experience that it is. As a consequence, some professors who have been members of the Spartan family for years and decades are on uncertain grounds. We cannot allow this to be for our fellow brothers and sisters; these individuals who have given their lives and passions to our alma mater. Please help us as we demand a new direction from our interim provost, in petition and if necessary, protest. At a time when the very essence of our university--our heritage--is in jeopardy, it is up to us, the alumni, current student body, and community as a whole, to band together and have a voice in the direction of our beloved Green and Gold!
