Intercoms and bathroom locks in the Warren Prescott k-8 Schools' Upper grade building
Why this petition matters
The Warren Prescott K-8 School is divided up into 2, 2 floor buildings. The main and larger one, is where students of grades K1-6, or elementary, have their main classes. The other is a smaller building where students of the grades 7-8, or middle school, have their main classes. The elementary side of the school provides student access to 4 bathrooms(2 for girls, 2 for boys) with about 10 or 12 stalls in each. Each stall has a lock and each bathroom has a lock. This side of the school also has intercoms in every classroom, room and area of the school that get direct messages live from the main office. The middle school side of the school has 3 bathrooms, (one for girls, one for boys, and one for staff), only 2 of which have student access. Each student bathroom has one toilet, no lock, and no stall. The staff bathroom has a one toilet, no stall, but a lock. This is a problem. In the case of a real situation where an intruder has put the school in danger and we have to go on lockdown, a middle school student who is in the bathroom will have no safe place to go. They have no way of knowing about the emergency because when these things happen, only the teachers get a direct text message and immediately have to go into containment in their classrooms. In this case, the student who is in the bathroom while this happens is in danger. They cannot be let into the classroom, the cannot lock themselves in the bathroom, and they have nowhere to hide. Since this situation wouldn't happen in the elementary side of the school, where there are intercoms and bathroom locks, then it shouldn't happen in the middle school building of the school either. Every student and every teacher should have equal access to safety and knowledge in case of an emergency, which is why we need to bring attention to this issue.
