Integration of plurilingualism in Korea
We are Chloé Besnard, Nina Rateau, Mincho Kim and Ale Mor Niass and we are students in L2 on Sciences of language in Tours. We decided to create this petition to try to insert plurilingualism in Korea. Indeed, plurilingualism is already present in several countries, especially in Europe, but it should be more common. With this in mind, we decided to begin this project with Korea because there are many asian countries which are monolinguist.
On the one hand, we are going to talk about the different problems caused by monolingualism. First, monolingualism created economic repercussions. Indeed, it is a real problem in terms of competitiveness. In fact, we know that English is a fairly fluent language. However, businesses are increasingly in search of candidates mastering other languages. But today, they find it difficult to find these multilingual profiles on the market, which is a hindrance to their development in Korea. Secondly, monolingualism causes other problems like the locking of the borders. Indeed, the fact of not speaking other languages is restricting the different relations with the world like tourism, commercial exchanges and political communication. And, we can say that in monolingualism countries there is a type of linguistic discrimination which tend to overvalue the monolingualism, which becomes contradictory with the development of plurilingualism. This discrimination is called the glottophobia, which is a xenophobia based on contempt for each other’s language. The sociolinguist Philippe Blanchet invented this word for linguistic discrimination. It defines as such : “contempt, hatred, aggression, rejection, exclusion, of people, negative discrimination actually or allegedly based on the fact of considering incorrect, inferior, bad certain linguistic form used by these people”. To finish, due to the monolingual policy, multicultural families do not have many opportunities to learn the languages of the two countries. For this reason, children from multicultural families often suffer from language developmental disabilities and learning difficulties because they do not fully acquire bilingualism.
On the other hand, we are going to talk about the different solutions to insert plurilingualism in Korea. First, in Korea, the fact of learning other languages is perceived as useless. So, we think it would be interesting to insert a class to explain to students why it is important to learn languages. Secondly, in Korea students have to learn English in preschool then japanese or chinese in highschool. But according to us, there are not enough choices and it would be beneficial to this country to talk more languages, especially western languages like French or Spanish. For this, we think that it would be necessary to add the learning of a new language like French in primary school then the choice of several languages in middle school. For example, in France students have to choose between Spanish and German in middle school. To finish, we think there are other ways than school for learning other languages. For example, it would be interesting to create websites to help people to learn languages like duolingo in France.
To conclude, we created this petition in order to make a difference in Korea and put the solutions we proposed in place. If you agree with us, you can sign this petition and share it.
