I'm signing because trans people are apparently so hard for cis people to see. We've gotten to a point at which harassing many categories of people whether through slurs or other means is unacceptable (or so people act once someone calls it out). On the other hand, this apparently leads people to feel that there's already been enough done in the name of tolerance and inclusion. Because of this, we have events like this one in which a trans person is tormented to the point of literally running away crying while someone openly disrespects them and spouts hate speech. I have to agree that this would not have been accepted had the issue been anything else. A cis homosexual is hurt, that's a problem. A non-white cis person is tormented over their skin colour, that's a problem. Someone talks trash about cis women, that's a problem. A trans person runs off crying, "Oh well, sucks to be [wrong gendered pronoun]. Free speech, yo." IoP says that "knowledge grows out of analysis and competition of ideas" but doesn't explain how spouting /additional/ hate speech and targeting an individual in response to a complaint about pointlessly offending people is something that particularly needs to be analysed there. Go on, IoP. Tell us everything that offends /you/ and why we should display it in front of you and then just do it more when you complain.

I used to be very inspired by Dan Savage, but this is completely unacceptable. Safe spaces should be safe, no matter who you are.

What is with people not understanding things. I don't know. I'm very sick of people who cannot figure out where they stand and who don't know their stuff, nor consider themselves in the wrong. If you hurt someone and it was not to help them out nor point out something that hurts others, then you are in the wrong.

The disregard for the intersections of identities, privileges, and oppression seen throughout this case is mortifying. Dan Savage, a white cis gay man, seems to fail to understand the power of what he preaches about with regards to whatever the hell he spoke about at this seminar - along with all those in support of him. He reflects a culture of misogyny, racism, transphobia, etc. still prevalent within U.S. society today. We cannot continue to let these cases slip by when they perpetuate these ongoing oppression within individuals' lives for fear of being "overly sensitive" & whatnot. I refuse to stay silent and let such injustice pass by me before I meet my own demise. THIS SHIT MATTERS!
