Demand Safety and Justice for IAIA Students
Dear Dr. Robert Martin, President of the Institute of American Indian Arts:
We are writing to you today to vocalize our support for the student who has recently come forward with an allegation of sexual assault by Alumni Relations Manager Chee Brossy and to demand an immediate suspension to allow for a thorough investigation of these allegations.
As we are sure you know, sexual assaults on Native/First Nations/Aboriginal/indigenous peoples are much higher than the general population. All over the country, our people are preyed upon, kidnapped, murdered, assaulted, and ignored. This is not just a troubling pattern that exists but a form of predation that goes back generations. It is an evil that everyone who works in Indian Country must take a stand against, loudly and decisively, at every opportunity.
Tribal Colleges and Universities are meant to be a safe place where students can grow and receive a quality education without having to compromise their identity as Native people. Your institution has yielded numerous bright artists that are helping to bring color and sound to Indian Country, giving voice to the voiceless as their heroes have done. TCUs are the very last place on earth that Native people should have to fear for their safety.
It is with all of this in mind that we are imploring, demanding, that you take these and all allegations of sexual assault on your campus seriously. An immediate suspension and investigation of Chee Brossy would be a start.
Waewaenen, miigwetch, thank you
