For the safety of the many young children walking to/from school, (especially those unaccompanied) we demand that Darebin Council instate a Crossing Supervisor on Mitchell Street during school times.

Mitchell Street is a wide road with many intersections. Traffic often moves faster than the limit. Even with the current pedestrian islands, primary school aged children cannot cross the roads safely as many of the islands are placed in close proximity to intersections or roundabouts. It just isn’t safe and we are worried that serious harm will come to our children.

We understand that Darebin Council will be seeking community feedback for our local area but not until 2023 and then any implementations will not occur for years following that. We want our children to be safe NOW!

We, the undersigned hereby petition the City of Darebin to immediately place a supervised school crossing on Mitchell Street, Northcote.
