NTHS is home to a large number of LGBT+ students. The current structure of bathroom facilities does not equally accommodate for gender non-conforming or transgender individuals. While the students of NTHS appreciate the efforts made by the school board in establishing a gender neutral bathroom on the first floor, we are asking for at least one bathroom accessible for transgender and other LGBT+ students per floor, and ideally in other locations which at this time do not exist to accommodate transgender individuals - such as the alumni center. The location of the current bathroom is not convenient for the majority of students, and is lacking in privacy due to the frosted windows which display a student’s silhouette from the outside. Ideally, we are asking for NTHS to comply with New York State Law under Governor Cuomo’s signing the “Assembly Bill A5240A into law, requiring, in part, that school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York state designate all single-occupancy bathroom facilities as gender neutral.” We are at the least hoping for the school board to recognize our need for these accommodations, and act to install more gender neutral bathrooms in locations more accessible to students.
