In recent years, our community of Big Spring, Texas, has experienced an unsettling increase in scares related to gun violence. As a parent, this hits too close to home, knowing that our children may be at risk simply by attending school – a place where they should feel most safe and protected. Our schools, particularly Big Spring High School and Big Spring Jr. High, currently lack the adequate security measures needed to ensure the safety of our children.

One glaring gap in our current security protocol is the insufficiency of on-campus resource officers. This not only leaves our schools vulnerable but also exacerbates the anxiety felt by parents, students, and staff. With the rise in school-related incidents nationwide, it is imperative that we take proactive steps to prevent any potential tragedies in our own schools.

We propose the installation of metal detectors at the entrances of Big Spring High School and Big Spring Jr. High. Metal detectors are a proven deterrent and would significantly boost the security of our schools by promptly identifying and preventing dangerous weapons from entering the premises. This measure has been successfully implemented in various schools across the country, dramatically reducing the incidents of violence.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 94% of schools nationwide have implemented safety measures such as metal detectors, security cameras, and limited access protocols to enhance the safety of students. In our own state of Texas, several districts have adopted these measures with positive outcomes, illustrating the effectiveness of such interventions.

We understand that the installation of metal detectors may raise concerns about the school environment. However, with careful planning and execution, metal detectors can be integrated seamlessly into our daily routines, without causing significant disruptions. They provide peace of mind for parents, students, and educators, offering a safer learning environment for all.

I urge the Big Spring Independent School District to prioritize the safety of our children by implementing this crucial safety measure. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Protect our future leaders. Protect our children.
