Why this petition matters
The average time it takes an ambulance to reach someone suffering from life-threatening injuries is seven minutes. Catastrophic bleeding from a trauma injury such as a stabbing, shooting or road traffic collision can prove fatal in three to five minutes.
Bleed control kits save lives by controlling the blood flow from a wound long enough for medical care to arrive. 11122 knife crime offences were recorded in London in 2021. So far, City of London Police have distributed 320 bleed control kits to late-night venues throughout Square Mile however this is not enough and too localised.
Knife crime can happen anytime and anywhere, not just near late-night venues.
We propose the following;
- Establish a relationship between the Metropolitan Police and The Daniel Baird Foundation and launch a public awareness campaign across London.
- Install 10,000 bleed kits on London streets and public venues, rolled out in the same way as defibrillators.
- Teach children in London secondary schools how to use the kits.
