Tweak Instagram's Guidelines to Foster Better Relations Between Influencers and Fan-bases

Social media celebrities are aware of how much they influence our current generation of youth. With 85% of teenagers (aged 14-17) and 69% of children (11-13) using phones and accessing the internet, it should be an imperative that members of the entertainment class and their impressionable fans form the most genuine and human connections possible.

Large swaths of these youth, after all, see social media celebrities and influencers not as entertainers, but friends, brothers, sisters, etc. However, the same can’t be said for entertainers and the way they see their fanbases. Unfortunately, in the era of “clickbait,” controversy can be flipped into coins, and there are influencers who’ve built entire brands on foundations of negativity, squabbles and altercations.

These “social media moments” don’t inspire their impressionable fanbases to treat their neighbor empathetically. Rather, likely, they inspire them to do the opposite. While it may look good on the timeline and, in some cases, lead to more open doors for any and all influencers involved - perhaps even the chance for the average civilian to become an influencer themselves - it’s a wasted opportunity to maximize empathy and humanity within the ranks of their audiences.

To amend this, we propose an slightly tweaked set of guidelines and an additional mini-seminar that would act as a bar for entry for any verified member of Instagram. The new list of conditions would divide influencers by their types of content and set rules accordingly.

For all verified users:

  • Read through empathy module, seminar. Take quiz
  • [If user neglects to take quiz, content will be reviewed before posting]
    Once quiz is passed, Instagram functions as normal but curators will still check content

For artists:

  • Avoid explicit violence, sexual themes. Would encourage disclaimer flagging content as entertainment

For fitness/wellness instructors:

  • Steer clear of photoshopping elements of body

For health instructors/beauticians:

  • Research products intensively before advertising. Avoid doing advertisements for potentially harmful health + beauty products
