Our Songlines started this petition to Instagram and

Australia is an ancient land we’re all proud to call our home. Contemporary Australia comprises more than 500 First Nations clan groups. We want to make traditional place names accessible for everyone so we all can reconnect with this land, its history and culture.

Our Songlines is calling on Instagram to make Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander place names to become recognisable on their app. Won’t it be great to learn more about the place we live, work or visit through Instagram?

As an Indigenous owned organisation that engages with our community largely through Instagram, we've found it frustrating not to be able to tag the location of the Countries we post from. We’re calling on Instagram to support Indigenous sovereignty and acknowledge the history of our lands by introducing traditional place names in the location feature of their app.

This simple feature will also help Indigenous folks share cultural knowledge with our peers and future generations. It can help build shared understanding that can bring all Australians closer to one another.

Please sign and share our petition to get #PlaceNamesOnInstagram. First Nations’ sovereignty was never ceded; Australia is and always will be Aboriginal land.

This petition is inspired by Rachael McPhail’s movement for broad acknowledgment of traditional place names across Australia.
