Did you know that the social media platforms we use daily are endangering individuals mental health through allowing - if not encouraging - shaming platforms, where individuals personal and private photos can be taken and put into the groups for everyone to shame them on how they look? The Subreddit r/awfuleyebrows has a shocking 180,000+ followers. There are countless private groups on facebook called (for example) “Thats it, i’m makeup/wedding/nail/tattoo/freckle shaming” (there are hundreds more), with tens of thousands of members, stealing peoples private or public photos and placing them publicly into a group to be humiliated and shamed. How can platforms such as facebook and Instagram be dedicated to promoting a safe space (eg their recent mental health awareness and safety measures) and yet allow such disgusting forums to go unnoticed?

How can such shaming platforms continue to exist? If Facebook wants to take a stand to improve the safety of their users, a prime example of where to start is here. Protect the youth from online bullying please, Mark, because at the moment your platform is making it easier and easier to take bullying into the online context. All social media platforms must change.

I am personally from the makeup community, it’s a harsh place to be a lot of the time with a LOT of critique thrown your way, but comments you can deal with, you can block people, block certain words from your comment section, you can form a safe bubble with those who you know will be positive and uplifting... but that’s all taken away from you when an individual decides to pop you into a subreddit, to submit an anonymous Instagram post, or to post your photo in a facebook shaming group where hundreds if not thousands of people run for a chance to mock and humiliate you. Recently, a mutual on Instagram (@mollycathiee) had her photo taken and put into a sub-reddit where she was relentlessly shamed for her makeup and her natural looks. This affected her mental health and her self confidence. This has happened to hundreds of individuals and I bet you half of them dont even know their photo is popping up on someone’s phone to be mocked.

Here is a snippet from Facebook’s community standards: “We distinguish between public figures and private individuals because we want to allow discussion, which often includes critical commentary of people who are featured in the news or who have a large public audience. For public figures, we remove attacks that are severe as well as certain attacks where the public figure is directly tagged in the post or comment. For private individuals, our protection goes further: we remove content that's meant to degrade or shame, including, for example, claims about someone's sexual activity. We recognise that bullying and harassment can have more of an emotional impact on minors, which is why our policies provide heightened protection for users between the ages of 13 and 18“ - this identifies that they should be taking down such groups as they degrade and shame individuals, but this does not happen and is extremely difficult to force Facebook to do. Further into their community standards guidelines they have many more points that show they should be taking content down in such groups.

Within Reddit Community standards:

Rule 1: Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

Rule 3Respect the privacy of others. Instigating harassment, for example by revealing someone’s personal or confidential information, is not allowed. Never post or threaten to post intimate or sexually-explicit media of someone without their consent.

and these are just two of the many platforms. These groups, subreddits and pages need to be taken down and banned once and for all, and these platforms need to take accountability for the bullying that is happening at such a huge number.
