"Online news site Inquirer.net has taken down contributed articles tagging Senate President Vicente Sotto III in alleged attempt to whitewash the rape case of sexy actress Pepsi Paloma, a minor, in 1982.

As of Wednesday, July 4, the articles "The rape of Pepsi Paloma" and "Was Pepsi Paloma murdered?" written by United States-based columnist Rodel Rodis are no longer available on the news site.

Similarly, a March 2016 news article on Sotto's denial that he used his political affiliation to influence the court decision on the rape case was also removed.

Original links to the articles, when clicked, now redirect readers to the homepage of the Inquirer.

In statement, Inquirer.net management said: 'The articles on the Pepsi Paloma case are currently under review and are unavailable at the moment.- Rappler'"

We call on Inquirer to publish these articles once again! The act of taking them down on account of a request made by a public official is an affront to our democracy!

It is said that a democratic society is built on an educated public. The removal of these articles is a blatant act of censorship that inhibits the public from making informed decisions. The act of Senator Sotto, a lawmaker, in requesting that these articles be taken down is an indirect violation of the our constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We call on Inquirer to remain steadfast in its role as the fourth pillar of democracy, to stay insulated from any pressure made by a lawmaker, if only to ensure that the Filipino civil society remains to be under a democratic government--- a form of government that, at this point in time, is slowly slipping from our grasp.

Let this also be a call to my fellow Filipino citizens to fight for whatever little democracy we have. It is our bounden duty to ensure that those who have sacrificed their lives for our democracy, and those victims of violations of it, have not died in vain.
