In Illinois there is a law that dispropotionately affects the lives of Black and Brown people of the nation and that law is the accountablity theory. Webster's definition of theory is supposition or system of ideas explaining something, esp. one based on general principles, speculation. Illinois prison system is full of individuals locked up on "speculation". For those who dont know what accountability is, its in the act of a forcible felony(robbery, theft,etc) someone loses their life all involve are held responsible even if they didnt pull the trigger. A bad decision of one changes the life of all. Recently a bill was passed that clarified that in the midst of the crime if the homeowner, cleck, police officer shoots and kills a codefendent the remaining defendants cannot be charge with his or her death. The bill passed early 2021 but wasnt made retroactive.(meaning affecting those already incarcerated on similiar offenses.) By changing this thousands of families will see the return of their brothers and sister, fathers and mothers sons and daughters. Thousands have been incarcerated under false pretences having not killed anyone but labeled a murderer. By getting this 150k signatures we're making the lawmakers take notice of the unjust behavior that has been going on for far too long. The people who are being affected are those who didnt actual committ the murder and who are forced to serve 100% of their time and alot of times are givin longer sentences than the actual murderer. Recently a bill was introduce SB2363 but wasnt passed it would have made the accountabilty a law and instead of being sentence as a murder codefendents would be charge as accomplices making their time eligible for a lesser sentence and 50%. We the people can makes this change if we stick together and show that our voice matter our loved ones can come home.
