Emily Leonard started this petition to Inner-West Council Sydney and

For many years, prior to the amalgamation of councils, the Marrickville Garbage collections were smooth, safe and efficient.

However, in recent months, since amalgamation to form the Inner West Council, the Garbage collection times in many local areas have been completely changed. Where we used to see collections of garbage in the early hours of mornings, many areas are now seeing their garbage collected in the late afternoons and early evenings.

Because of this, we are witnessing the collection trucks active on many of our major thoroughfares during the peak hour traffic, with resultant traffic jams where long lines of vehicles are held up behind stopping and starting collection trucks. This is a completely unacceptable and dangerous situation where the council collectors are dodging traffic overtaking their trucks whilst trying to do their job. All workers in this country are entitled to a safe working environment and it is illegal not to supply such safe conditions. Driver frustration is obviously high due to these extended delays and dangerous situations are created for other vehicle drivers and pedestrians. Previously, this wasn't an issue because collections occurred in the early hours of the mornings where there was little or no traffic.

Due to the unsafe timing of the collections, the workers are rushing to get off the busy roads during the peak hour periods and often bins are not completely emptied. This constitutes a health hazard where rotting rubbish left in bins on premises has to wait another week to be emptied.

Working residents are finding it extremely inconvenient to have to put bins out in the mornings before they go to work, for a late afternoon pickup. This means that the bins sit in the full summer heat all day on footpaths before they are picked up - yet another health hazard. Previously, bins were put out in the evenings (after work) to be collected in the cool (much better for workers) of the next early morning in time to be brought back in before going to work.

These new collection times need to be changed. They are not safe for council collectors, road users and the community. What used to be a great council service is no longer. Changes made should always make things better, not worse.

Cost cutting should not be at the expense of the safety of council workers and the general public.
