Inner West Council has recommended Globe Wilkins Preschool be relocated to May Murray Early Childhood Centre (reducing the preschool from 50 places to 24 places), effectively closing down May Murray. The children enrolled at May Murray will be moved to Yirran Gamal, the new Steel Park Centre, (reducing the new centre from 60 places to 36) by January 2019.
The knock on effect of council’s proposal to relocate Globe Wilkins to May Murray will result in an imminent loss of 50 childcare places that are much needed given the growing size of our local government area. This means that when the new 60 place Yirran Gamal, (construction of which cost Marrickville residents almost $5 million) is opened, the net gain from this internal shuffling will be only 10 places. This decision would also essentially end a unique and beloved early childhood centre with a long and valued history in our community.
May Murray has functioned as a thriving, council-run early childhood education centre in Premier Street Marrickville for over 40 years. Well loved by the community, with it's intimate setting in an old Marrickville house, and high quality of care, it has been accurately described as a family, and May Murray itself, a home. This unique offering has also produced the innovative Cooks River Kids, and the long tenure of its educators is a strong indicator of how special this unique centre is.
Closing May Murray and relocating it’s places to a new centre would be detrimental the its children and staff. Settling young children into a childcare setting can be an incredibly stressful and anxious experience; the enrolled children have overcome that hurdle, with many not planning to move until commencing primary school.
We propose council respond to the need to relocate Globe Wilkins Preschool with a solution that does not sacrifice another of its thriving and long standing local centres and the children that use it; in order to substantially increase, instead of simply reallocate, the number of childcare places available to local families.
For further information on the council recommendation, please refer to the Council Agenda for the Ordinary Council Meeting on 26 June, 2018, Section C0618 Item 8, at the following link: https://www.innerwest.nsw.gov.au/council/meetings/council-meetings
Sign this petition to let council know that they cannot simply take our services away from us, without even consulting the community, and help ensure that May Murray is there for not just the currently enrolled children, but for those children of the future.
