Dear Sir/Madam,

We are writing this petition in order to request for a change in the recent events of our Midterm ITEC 3210 examination.

Moreover, on March 1st 2021, ITEC 3210 section M and O had their first examination which was 40% of the overall course, with 40MCQ for 40 minutes. Professor Xing Tan gave us the instructions for the midterm which many students found questionable. At start, professor Tan didn't take into consideration any of the students concerns in regards to insufficient timing, chapters and what material would be covered (as there are multiple books that the professor suggest), as well as on if we would have our assignment 1 feedback which would have helped greatly in preparation of the exam.

Per York University's Code of Conduct and Responsibilities for Faculty Members (Statement and Procedures) that was formed by the York University Senate and is in effect since 1984/04/26 on section II subsection 1, the university states and I quote "Teaching: faculty members shall carry out their responsibility for teaching by keeping up to date with relevant secondary literature and carefully preparing lectures and course materials, taking care to make themselves accessible to students for academic consultation, to inform students adequately regarding course formats, assignments, and methods of evaluation, to maintain teaching schedules in all but exceptional circumstances, to inform students adequately of any necessary cancellation and rescheduling of instruction, and to adhere to the schedules for submission of grades and evaluations by their Departments and Faculties."

We, the students believe that this section partially does not meet the criteria with ITEC 3210 section M/O. Moreover, the professor did not specify from which book we would have to study, and even though we do have a primary book that we go over, there were a lot of questions from the exam that were not referred in either the lecture, the book, or the PowerPoint slides. Also, multiple students have requested from Xing Tan to record his lecture as the PowerPoint slides are insufficient for a student to remember what was discussed inside the class when there is no reference, therefore any diagrams and drawings from the PowerPoint slides being practically baseless.

All in all, those issues could have been prevented by professor Xing Tan if he had given to the students clear instructions in regards to the lectures and the midterm and we [the students] are here addressing those issues in order to improve the overall experience. We would like first to propose that professor Xing Tan to record his lectures (especially when everything has moved into an online format during the pandemic periods, and many other professor's record and upload their lectures) as this would give us a written/recorded statement by the professor's expectation in regards to any material given on eClass. Secondly, we would like to request from professor Xing Tan as well as any other professors that are teaching this course to carefully reconsider the time given or even the exam format itself in regards to examination as many students feel cheated and betrayed by an exam that if we were given sufficient timing could have been completed in a less stressful and more efficient way.

We hope there is room for discussion between the professor, the students and the department in order to resolve these issues.

Thank you for your time,

Regards,

ITEC 3210 M/O students
