Hi Friends! My younger brother, Will, has anaphylactic food allergies to a long list of foods, medicines and other things. Will can go into anaphylactic shock from both digestion and skin contact to the allergen. Some of his allergies are so bad, they can not even be measured. Recently, Will went to Flour Restaurant in Moreland Hills, Ohio with a group of friends before the Winter Formal dance. Again, Will brought his own food from home because eating outside the home is just not an option. Will always brings his own plates and silverware to ensure that everything is "will friendly". At the end of the meal, a waiter handed my brother a bill for $15 and stated that he was being charged for the plate. This has never happened before and my family has dined in restaurants across the world; a restaurant has never been so ignorant as to charge my brother for simply sitting at the table and for said plate that my brother didn't even use. AFTER handing my brother the bill, the manager stated they could have made my brother a "special" meal, again my brother would not be able to eat that meal because of the high likelihood of cross contamination from other foods in the kitchen. Will should never of had to face this discrimination or ignorance. Do you think my brother wants to have to sit at a table with his friends and not be able to eat with them? Or have to miss out on certain activities because they involve food? Since kindergarten, my brother's friends have been more educated and open to being an ally for Will; a lot of them even asked to have a different lunch made so that they would be able to sit with Will. Food Allergies are protected under the American Disability Act thus ensuring that public places are not allowed to discriminate. I am asking that this restaurant be held accountable for their discrimination, ignorance and harassment of a 16 year old boy. I also want to ensure that others with food allergies never have to go through the same thing. Food allergies are not a choice nor a joke. Flour Restaurant clearly values profits over the lives and well being of their customers. I ask you to join me in signing this pledge to protect the rights of those with food allergies and hold the public places that discriminate accountable.

Per the DOJ, "No individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any person who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation.” 42 U.S.C. § 12182. In addition, both Title I and Title II prohibit: "Denial of the opportunity to participate or benefit:

-Unequal opportunity to participate or benefit

-Separate opportunity to participate or benefit where necessary, but ineffective

-Imposing or applying eligibility criteria that screen out or tend to screen out,

unless necessary

I will NOT stop until Flour is held accountable for their actions. This should have never happened in the first place and I hope no one has to ever experience it again.
