The Nigeria electoral umpire, the independent national electoral commission (INEC) has indicated it will end the present voter registration/validation on June 30, 2022. That is about 8 months to first 2023 election. We do not understand the reasons behind this nor the justification for it. We believe that extending it to December 2022 or at least October 2022 will give more Nigerians, especially those that will be attending the mandatory 18 years in a few months time the opportunity to register and vote next year. Again, there seem to be an obvious recent enthusiasm amongst those who had earlier stood on the fence before now resulting to an unprecedented surge in registration, so we believe that the set date of June 30, is not only too short but also too far from the 2023 elections, hence the need for the extension.
