Why this petition matters

Started by Amanda Richardson

At the moment, landlord licenses are being used by individual councils to bring in extra revenue, to the council. They are levied on each individual property, so are really a property tax and rogue landlords are not being stopped by this. But good landlords are being penalised for doing the right thing. The scheme is also reducing the amount of private landlords, as letting is becoming an unsustainable business. This will increase the pressure on local councils to house people who want to rent or can’t afford to buy.
We are proposing a landlord license, that licences each landlord in the uk, not the properties they own, at a sensible fee, and placing each landlord on a central database.  Rather like a driving license, that covers you for any amount of cars that you drive, anywhere in the uk.
Bad landlords can still be taken to task and a fine levied against them and because the database is held centrally and all councils can access it, it will apply a joined up approach which is missing at the moment.
please sign our petition and let’s get landlord licenses working properly.
