Give childcare subsidy priority to the new immigrants

New immigrants face many struggles while trying to settle in Canada due to systems that minimize the scope for utilizing immigrants' expertise in their respective fields.  They need to join the workforce to settle their life here and support their families. Many do not have any support of family or friends and this adds to their stress.

Sometimes employers look for Canadian work experience and local training. As a result, Immigrants sometimes are required to participate in additional training and workshops to develop their (soft) skills with regard to Canadian work culture. Those who have children cannot go to work or to take training because no one is here to take care of their children. This problem has two sides they cannot afford to pay the fees for their child's daycare because they do not have a job. Even if they do, the fee is too high to afford. On the other hand, they cannot get childcare subsidy because they are not working. Moreover, the subsidy waitlist is long and many times, there is no space in the child care centre that they have found.

We are therefore advocating to support subsidy priority to new immigrants so that they can prepare themselves for the Canadian work culture as they join and strengthen the workforce. We want to bring this to the attention of the Honorable Indira Naidoo-Harris, Minister of Education, and to the Honorable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, who we believe can make a difference and help support the difficult process that New Immigrants face.

Join us in this effort to make it happen. We need your support to make our voices heard.
