We the undersigned are outraged that the Indianapolis Public School Board and administration at IPS School #31 has not taken swift action to immediately dismiss the gym instructor Mr. Crawford from teaching at their facility.
Not only is it shameful, but also tantamount to condoning verbal violence against our youth to continue to allow this individual to teach our children when he clearly has racial bias and hatred in his approach to dealing with African American children.
Grade school should be a place where students learn math, reading, geography and history, not bigotry and first hand experiences with racial epithets. As an institution of education it is your job to care not only for the academic progression of our youth but also for their mental capacity to prosper in life. Uphold your end by delivering our children from bigots like Crawford.
Therefore, we are calling upon IPS to immediately do the following:
1. Fire the instructor responsible for calling a 12 year old child the "N-Word".
2. Asking that the school board work with third party vendors to institute racial equity training for teachers and staff working within the system.
3. IPS issue a formal apology to the Martin family and especially the young woman who had to endure this verbal assault from an individual who is supposed to be a mentor in her formative education.
