Why this petition matters

Started by Sandy Jeffers

DEMAND THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS RE-OPEN THE REUBEN ENGAGEMENT CENTER!!! We have been without the engagement center since the beginning of April when the staff were diverted to work at the Covid Quarantine hotel. In the meantime, we lost our ONLY FREE detox program serving men and women experiencing homelessness. Of all services to cut during a pandemic, we select the only program of its type focused on saving those with nothing. I should have spoken up then.  With people dying from addiction everyday, WHY ARE WE CLOSING THE ONLY PROGRAM WE HAVE.

This is reflective of a systemic response to the disenfranchised, particularly those struggling with homelessness and addiction. We cannot continue to stigmatize and discriminate against homeless Hoosiers suffering from mental illness and addiction, especially while agency's whose sole mission is homeless advocacy, remain silent. We are too busy, too distracted or we “leave it to the next person“ to care about the voiceless. TOGETHER WE HAVE A BIG VOICE.   I would be forever grateful for your support!

Reuben Engagement Center
The Albert G. and Sara I. Reuben Engagement Center provides shelter, case management, mental health evaluations, and housing referrals to individuals experiencing homelessness who have substance abuse disorder and/or mental health diagnoses. The engagement center provides a safe place for individuals experiencing homelessness and are experiencing drug or alcohol intoxication to be diverted from jail or an emergency room and who are unable to gain access to emergency shelter options due to active substance abuse. The Reuben Engagement Center is a part of the City of Indianapolis – Office of Public Health and Safety.
