Create a mandatory class on cultural competency and IUPUI's history of gentrification.
Why this petition matters
Today, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) literally stands on a foundation of gentrification and displacement. Predating the university, were communities of black people living, learning, and supporting black-owned businesses. Some even referred to the areas of Lockefield gardens, Indiana Avenue, and Ransom place as "Black downtown". What these communities experienced is commonly know as gentrification. Gentrification is not limited to the downtown area and is a common practice that contributes to systemic racism. Unfortunately, many of IUPUI's students are not aware of this history.
We acknowledge that IUPUI is not able to change its past but it can change its future. By teaching a mandatory course on cultural competency and IUPUI's history of gentrification the university can uplift forgotten communities and cultivate a community of anit-racist and socially aware people. As students learn about and display cultural competency we can expect a more safe and enjoyable campus experience for students with marginalized identities. Furthermore, we highlight that IUPUI students are future professionals and cultural competency will be required for all career fields to ensure a more just and equitable society.
