Online classes are not beneficial to students across the country, but especially those who attend Indiana University. Students need face to face learning especially with classes designed around group projects and group collaboration overall. Also, many students take advantage of office hours and losing that will be detrimental to our education. After speaking with many students, we all agree that grades will begin to slip.

By implementing a (short) summer semester of 4-6 weeks, students would be able to gain back their full college experience. Students and those who help them to pay for their college tuition are not paying to take classes online. Now material will be restricted and condensed in order to work online. These classes are no longer the classes we signed up for. We are paying to take classes in Bloomington, gets hands-on help, and be social with those who they are surrounded by. A lot of students are unable to go home due to travel bans and health issues. Indiana University needs to cater to the people who make this school run. We appreciate the health measures the university has taken since coronavirus is very serious, but given the current state of the country we are working towards a fast recovery. Also, students from the ages of around 18-22 years old will prove to be the least affected by this virus. It’s clear that there are people with health issues or of older ages that are involved with helping the university to run, so they should be the ones in isolation. There are many ways to bring students back to campus, such as having TAs take over campus teaching with detailed instructions from faculty members.

Please sign this petition if all you want is to go back home. Bloomington is not the same without their students and students are not the same without Bloomington.

Signed with love,

Toby Polster and Anne Burdick
