Add a vegetarian option to menus in Indiana High school cafeterias

Teenage obesity is a growing problem. Indiana is ranked 10th in the nation for obesity, which puts people at great risk for heart disease, stroke, & diabetes. Vegetarian/Vegan options in the lunch room can cost no more than the normal lunch junk food. 
Many students get the majority of their daily nutrition from the school cafeteria, why not give them a healthy alternative. Keep kids energized, focused, & full longer than the nuntrient deprived french fries & potato chips.

There is a matter of great importance that I would like to bring to your attention. As a vegetarian/vegan, having adequate vegetarian/vegan menu options is important to me. Providing vegetarian menu items not only appeals to vegetarian students, it also helps those looking for healthy, dairy-free, and easy kosher options.

Like me, many students avoid eating animal products for ethical reasons. Many more are skipping meat-based meals for health reasons. The vegetarian population is quickly growing, with more than 25 percent of the population opting out of meat meals.

Obesity is a growing problem among America’s teens, with as many as 33 percent qualifying as obese. As a school, you have the opportunity to combat this epidemic by providing nutritious menu items. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has provided scientific evidence showing that vegetarian and vegan foods promote good health and help young people maintain a healthy weight.

Up to 50 million Americans suffer from lactose intolerance, with 90 percent of Asian-Americans and 75 percent of Native- and African-Americans suffering from this condition. Providing vegan options meets the needs of lactose-intolerant or allergic students.
