The 2017 Indiana Legislature passed a budget for the July 1, 2017-June 30, 2019 biennium based on faulty projections for students enrolling in public schools. In fact, many more students enrolled than had been expected in the budget. Originally, the budget shortfall was projected to be approximately 9 million dollars. As more research has been done, the figures and projections now coming in from the Indiana DOE show the actual shortfall could be up to 60 million dollars. (as reported by the Indianapolis Star). Indiana’s public schools are already reeling from inadequate funding due greatly in part to the state funding two systems, traditional public schools, and vouchers. The leaders of both Houses of the Indiana Legislature promised before this session ever started to fix this projected shortfall. However, neither bill that is currently being considered is adequate to do so. Indiana public schools can't afford another devastating financial hit. Indiana Legislators, keep your promise and fix Indiana public school funding now!
