Dont give a simple word power, it is something that doesnt need to make a big deal

I used to go to this event 10 years ago at Crows Nest Hotel and saw first hand how it broke down barriers in a non gay environment as well as draw together people from all backgrounds and lifestyles. We live in a country of choice not control.

At present, I associate the term "tranny" with a positive image of some expressing their gender identity, or in the case of drag queens, their creative identity, through whatever means they choose.

Making the term "tranny" taboo, or interpreting it as an attack when it is used by someone from within the trans community, extended or otherwise, who proudly identifies as being a "tranny", gives power to those who choose to use the term to hurt those to whom it applies.

The term "gay" has not been removed from those concepts to which it applies just because of it's colloquial and slang use, regardless of how widespread this type of use is. I still proudly identify as gay, and that won't change just because of the few people who choose to use the word out of context or as an attack.

I am a professional drag queen and members of the GLBTI community and personally identify with the word tranny and do not feel it is a slur. Unless used as a slur. Very much in the way straight people say gay in a negative way meaning yuck gross, bad etc. And we gay ppl on the other hand use gay as a positive term. It's spalling that one member of our own community is attacking us for who we are just as much as she is very much the same.

I believe this petition is absolutely crucial for the wellbeing of GLBT communities around Australia. The term 'tranny' is never used in these contexts as a slur, but is instead used to foster a stronger sisterhood and understanding with other gender variant people. This word is used with love and affection, not hate and vilification. Over-policing language will just destroy the subversive ability of our community, which is what it was built on.

The word ‘tranny’ only has unhappy connotations when used in a negative circumstance. Tranny Bingo does nothing of the sort. It's an entertaining, awareness building satirical event that is hugely popular across Sydney. To take away that word Tranny only gives power to those who use it negatively. Let's own it! x
