Brittany Smith started this petition to Indiana Department of Transportation

My name is Brittany Smith and I am petitioning for a stop light to be placed at the intersection of Hwy 30/Plymouth-Goshen Trail for the safety and convenience of our community.  This is a very dangerous intersection.  There have been multiple accidents at this location, including an accident AFTER the closure of the crossing took place.  This resulted in an individual getting airlifted from this intersection on 1-24-21.  Closing the crossing did not solve the safety issue. This move was not a solution to the problem, but simply a quick and inexpensive potential fix to save money with a possibility of  less fatalities at this location. The INDOT permanently closed the intersection without any consideration of how it would effect the business on Lilac Road with limited access to their facility. They disregarded the families that live down Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Lilac Road, and 7b road, that needed convenient access to their homes.  All of us now have to travel to Veterans highway, use other turn arounds on the highway (that are not any safer), or travel east to the South Bend exit-to Hwy 31-to get back off on the Valparaiso exit-west bound on 30-just to reach our homes. It is simply ridiculous.

Safety should be INDOT’s number one priority.  This closure prevents medical and safety personnel from reaching our homes quickly and efficiently in case of an emergency of any kind.  The business that is on Lilac road/Hwy 30 have dump trucks coming from the East continuously turning onto Plymouth Goshen Trail. I am not criticizing the business, but just stating it makes it difficult for adults and children driving to see around them while pulling out on a highway in which vehicles are traveling at excessive speeds.

I called about this matter in February. I spoke with INDOT about this matter again on 3-2-21.  They denied my request after they researched the matter.  Their reasoning suggested traffic lights on highways can increase the amount of accidents. They also stated people driving - such as semi’s, may not see the stop light in time due to the curve on the East side of the intersection.  I researched the average semi traveling on a highway with the maximum amount of weight (80k lbs) legally allowed.   At 65mph (speed limit is 60mph on Hwy 30) This semi would take approximately 525ft to come to a complete stop.  The distance from the green Hwy sign *at the beginning of the curve* to the intersection—is 0.3miles(1584ft).  This allows semi’s 1584 feet to stop before the intersection.

My question is.....what type of accidents are they suggesting will increase? Fender benders? Possibly the types of accidents that don’t involve major fatalities? I would rather have 10 less-severe accidents that may cause car damage, than one fatal accident that may take away a single life.

A stop light would make everything safer and more convenient.  It would slow the flow of traffic approaching Plymouth.  It would allow our children to cross the highway safely and travel 1 mile to school, instead of having to travel the complete opposite direction to Veteran’s highway and back, to reach school.  This stoplight would allow emergency personnel to reach us in an efficient time frame.  In emergency situations, minutes and even seconds matter in terms of saving someone’s life.

Please sign this petition and let the Indiana Dept. of Transportation know that the safety of our families mean more than the cost of a stoplight.
