who is sanjiv bhatt?

sanjiv bhatt is an ips officer who testified on oath against cm narendra modi in 2011. he testified in front of sc that he was present in the meeting between narendra modi (cm and home minister of gujarat) and the officers of gujarat government controlling the law and order machinery, where the law and order machinery was instructed to allow the hindus to react to godhra incident. the result was that police machinery looked the other way as more than 2000 muslims were killed (as per official figures).

sanjiv bhatt gave this testimony in 2011 and ever since he has been hounded by the gujarat government (of bjp) in one case or another. he was finally taken into custody on 5th september 2018 in a case of planting drugs in the room of a lawyer as a device to get the lawyer to vacate a small property occupied by the lawyer in the state of rajasthan on behalf of a judge there.

he was also named as an accused in the custodial death of a rioter arrested in jamnagar belonging to the vhp in the aftermath of l.k. advani's rath yatra being stopped in bihar.

in this second case, he has been sentenced to life in prison, probably the first police officer to have been awarded such a harsh punishment even when the rioter died 18 days in a private hospital after release from a two day police custody where it is alleged that sanjiv bhatt beat him to death.

he is presently in jail, pending bail in both cases as he seeks to challenge his case in the upper courts.

but the real reason is quite evident even for a layman.

the cm has become pm and enjoys prosecution immunity. but he does not enjoy prosecution immunity in criminal cases. and presiding over murder of thousands is a criminal case.

that is why sanjiv bhatt is in jail and getting justice for him is an onerous task as the system, including judiciary lives in mortal fear.

the only hope is to create enough pressure on the compromised institutions to work without fear. this can only be done if the case is made high profile and the oppressors back down. and that can only happen if there are enough people who put pressure on the system to stand up and do its task.
