Since the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, student lunches in District 204 have become free. Although this change has made it easier for students whose families are facing financial challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it also greatly restricts the lunch options for a majority of students. Firstly, many students find the serving size to be insufficient, as schools prevent them from getting a second or third meal. Furthermore, the school meals often fail to accommodate for students with dietary restrictions, such as vegans. Because many students are still willing to pay for a larger serving size or a wider variety of options, District 204 should bring back paid lunch options from previous years, in addition to the free lunches that are currently available.
