Ankit Singh started this petition to Indian Ministry of Environment and

India generates plastic waste of more than 25,940 tonnes everyday. Our land and water bodies are getting filled with plastic waste. Though India's per capita plastic consumption is 1/10th of the US, but due to large population and poor waste management system, India's plastic problem is much more serious. If we don't take any tough stand now, the day is not far when our whole planet with turn into a landfill.

One of the main contributor to this plastic waste is packaging. At this point in time, it's impossible to replace all the plastic packaging with organic packaging, but why can't we do away with oversized packaging? Food articles like chips, protein powders, corn flakes etc use oversized packaging which is more than half empty. Companies indulge in this practice to occupy bigger shelf space so that they can attract more eyeballs from a distance. As the competition is increasing, pack size are getting bigger and bigger. Sometimes even the e-commerce companies use large cartons filled with plastic bubble wraps to deliver small, non-fragile items. Once an e-portal delivered half kg 'washing powder' to me in a 5kg carton filled with bubble wraps.

It's time guys, that we take the onus on our shoulders and raise our voice. The government must pass a law that forces the companies to use the exact size of packaging across the categories. It's a very simple step which will not only reduce our plastic waste burden but also help companies to cut down their packaging & stocking costs.
