Save Indian workers from brutal exploitation in Nigeria.

Workers from India stationed in Nigeria employed in Dangote Oil Refinery Company in Lagos State have accused their employer Power Mech Nigeria Ltd. of forcing them to work without pay or protection amid the coronavirus pandemic. On of the workers who spoke to a Local Newspaper; Punch said - “We, the citizens of India, are speaking from Dangote Refinery, which is situated almost 60km away from Lagos in Nigeria. We are workers of the Dangote Refinery. The whole world is suffering from coronavirus, which is a global pandemic. Nigeria has also announced its lockdown. During this lockdown, the workers of Power Mech Company are being forced to work. The staff here are forcing us to work through physical violence. We request our Home Minister, Mr Amit Shah, and Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, to kindly understand our problems and help us get out of this situation by taking necessary steps to protect and save our lives" (Punch, 2 May 2020).

It is a disastrous human rights abuse situation developing here, where lives are at stake not because of the virus, but because of the brutal greedy nature of capitalist profiteers. Local Nigerian workers suffer similar ill-treatment. Dangote’s huge business empire is built on the brutal exploitation of workers of all races. A common struggle of all workers is needed to fight for the respect of international labour law and workers dignity. The starting point is for Nigerian trade unions to back this petition in solidarity. An injury to one is an injury to all. Also, it is highly imperative that the international community of workers and commoners rise up and demand the governments of India and Nigeria to intervene and avert this extreme form of human abuse of forcing the workers to a kind of slave labour.

The New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India), Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) and Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR) in Nigeria have jointly initiated this petition, we jointly appeal to all Trade Unions, Human Rights Organisations and progressive persons around the world to sign this and campaign to stop this inhuman treatment of workers from India. We call upon the Governments of India and Nigeria to immediately intervene and rescue the Dangote Oil Refinery Company workers.
