The Ganges River is a Holy River that is used by many, but extremely polluted with garbage and other unnatural things. The River is 1680 miles, it starts at the Gangotri Glacier, then finishes at the Ganges Delta. This river is the most sacred river in Hinduism, “Hindus believe that sins accumulated in past and current lives require them to continue the cycle of death and rebirth until they are cleansed. If they bathe at the Ganges on the most auspicious day of the festival, believers say they can rid themselves of their sins." Yet we continue to pollute the river with our garbage, and cause diseases for the ones that bathe in it. Our actions cause diseases such as hepatitis, typhoid, cholera, amoebic dysentery and a variety of skin afflictions. There is a plethora of Fecal Coliform bacteria in the water, this is not harmful for humans but it increases the chances of pathogens in the water. People drink this water for religious reasons, but the pollution affects their health. About 1.3 billion gallons (4.8 billion litres) of sewage waste is being dumped into the Ganges River, and the functioning capacity to treat sewage is only one billion litres per day. But your simple actions, that you can do, such as advising not to dump their waste into the water can improve the conditions of the water Ganges River significantly. If you sign this petition, you are helping spread awareness about the conditions of the Ganges River, and you are showing that you do care about situations like these.
