With land acquisition for the Chennai Salem expressway underway, farmers in Tiruvannamalai district are a worried lot. Approximately 95% of lands that would be acquired for the project is farmland.

All of the farmer's lives begin and end in the farmlands for the generations, most of the farmer's sentiments and livelihood is under great threat. The proposed projects cover five districts - Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem and definitely destroy reserved forests, agricultural lands, wells, and borewells. When the farmers heard about the project, they were disappointed. There is no rationale behind destroying nature that provides food and helps sustain life, not only farmers also laborers who work on farmlands will become unemployed.

A total of 2791 hectares will be acquired in this project and notification has been published by Ministry of Road and Transport and Highways in official Gazette under section 3A of National Highways Act. 1956. The notification was published on June 11, which provides for affected people an opportunity to file their objections within  21 days. 95% of the total land intended to be acquired has been described as" DRY", which are actually agricultural farms.

If the state and central governments started proposing and implementing projects that are unfriendly, distasteful, against humanity and nature, that the projects/ schemes should not be implemented or even to consider by the government.

Stopping these projects may help people to think more about their surrounding environment what is left, to concern and preserve. Many countries around the world are bringing human-related projects protecting the environment and not causing damage to them.

It is now our turn to protect agricultural lands that are part of our livelihood and saving for the future. Pease, you can support by signing this petition to make Central and State government stop acquiring lands and give back the agricultural lands to the farmers (Chennai-Salem Expressway)
