AN OPEN LETTER FROM CONCERNED ACADEMICS TO CALICUT UNIVERSITY

We are very pained and disappointed to learn from various sources regarding the prevailing academic environment at Calicut University. It has been observed that the University administration and the faculty members are constantly stoking controversies. As a public funded University, it is duty bound to inculcate and propagate Constitutional values in young minds, yet it seems that things are not happening in that way.
The recent controversy regarding the inclusion of an anti-India speech by Ms. Arundhati Roy in your BA English Semester III syllabus has crossed all limits of academic decency. While it is true that the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, but the same are limited by reasonable restrictions as well. As a public institution, the University of Calicut is duty bound to promote national unity and adhere to the Indian Constitution in letter and spirit.
It is outrageous that the two faculty members who were also ex Syndicate members of the Calicut University and part of its Academic Council that designed this syllabus, went to the extent of writing a book the very next year in which they tried to eulogize the anti-India acts of Ms. Roy. Authors wrote an introduction to Ms Roy's speech where she claimed hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, as "stain on Indian Democracy" thereby disrespecting the Hon. Supreme court of India. Authors were also praising her as a Human Rights activist who "supported the cause of Kashmiri Independence". Such an introduction by the two faculty members, Mr.Murukan Babu and Ms Abida Farooqui, clearly violates the constitutional provisions that uphold the unity and integrity of India.
Apart from this, Mr Murukan Babu had a very controversial past at the Calicut University. In 2013, as member of Board of Studies in English, Mr Babu included a poem by dreaded Al Qaeda Terrorist Al Rubaish in the Calicut University BA English III semester syllabus. In the introduction of the volume edited by Mr Babu, he claims that Al Rubaish was "held in detention in the Guantanamo Bay", without mentioning that he was a designated terrorist. This controversial textbook was later withdrawn and an enquiry commission was set up after public outrage. It is highly objectionable that faculty members having such controversial past and questionable credential were selected for designing the syllabus.
To add to this, the ISBN number and copyright permission of the controversial edited volume does not seem to be in order. Finally, it seems that the University administration and faculty members are hand in gloves and are a part of a larger agenda wherein such views which puts a question mark on the integrity of Indian State is included in a syllabus which is designed by faculty members whose academic credential itself is questionable.
All these issues demand a thorough investigation and possibility of a larger conspiracy needs to be looked into. Till then, we urge the Calicut University to immediately withdraw the controversial portion from the syllabus and take corrective measures against the concerned faculty members.
