Independent MPs: hundreds of lives are lost on our roads every year -- support the "safe rates" legislation

Each year an average of 330 people are killed as a result of heavy vehicle accidents on Australian roads. More than 5300 people are injured. Truck driving has a fatality rate that is 10 times the industrial average, and it seems that every day there are TV or newspaper reports on yet another trucking tragedy.

For decades major retailers like Coles and Woolworths have used their economic power to place unreasonable and dangerous demands on drivers. The pressure can leave some drivers feeling they have little option but to take risks on the road simply to meet a deadline.

As the wife of a truck driver, I understand only too well the pressures in the industry. Truckies are given impossible deadlines, forced to queue for hours unpaid to load and unload, and have delivery windows that take no account of road or weather conditions.

The Federal Government are responding by introducing "safe pay" laws. The legislation will help take the pressure out of the cab and demand companies be responsible for the safe transportation of their goods -- but it needs the support of cross bench Independent MPs to become law. The Coalition have indicated that they will not support the legislation and industry lobbyists are busy trying to convince the Independents to vote against the laws.

We need this legislation to halt the tragic loss of life on our roads.

Please sign this petition calling on cross bench MPs to support the Road Safety Remuneration Bill and help secure safer roads!

I'm signing this petition to show my support for the Road Safety Remuneration Bill. Your vote on this Bill will be crucial in addressing the tragic loss of life on Australian roads from truck crashes.

It seems that every day there are TV or newspaper reports on yet another trucking tragedy. In fact, every year an average of 330 people are killed as a result of heavy vehicle accidents on our roads. More than 5300 are injured. And truck driving has a fatality rate that is 10 times the industrial average.

As I’m sure you’ll agree there has been far too many lives lost on our roads. Many truck drivers face unreasonable pressure from major retailers like Coles and Woolworths. It can leave drivers feeling they have little option but to take risks on the road to meet deadlines.

The new "safe rates" legislation present a real opportunity to take the pressure out of the cab -- and will demand companies be responsible for the safe transportation of their goods.

We need this legislation to start putting a halt to the tragic loss of life on our roads -- but it will only pass if it has your support. I hope that you will support safe Australian roads and you'll join truck drivers, families and communities across Australia and industry experts in supporting the Bill.

Sincerely,
