Why this petition matters

Started by Christine McGowan

The children in the Wissahickon School District are supported in so many ways by the wonderful teachers, counselors, and administrators that they interact with daily. Without their support our children would not have the positive experience that they come home and share with us every day. One of the subjects that have been brought to most parents’ attention has been the disappointment of how long recess has been. 15 minutes feels too short for them and according to studies on the subject they are correct. According to the Wissahickon Elementary Handbook the children should be allowed at least 20 minutes of recess. I am not sure where that has fallen short.

As parents we need to listen to our children. Our children are voicing a need to connect with friends, have down time from the stressors of the school day, and time to release the built-up energy from being focused in class. We need to advocate on their behalf.

There are many policies that can't be changed within the school without approval of the school board and support of the Superintendent. We would like to offer psychoeducation about the social, emotional and health benefits to the school board /Superintendent at the Oct. meeting.

If you support a longer recess time, Please sign this petition.
