Over the summer, the DOE stipulated that the social distancing requirement in a classroom should be a range of 50-65 sqft per child (which equates to 8ft between children). This means that an average classroom of 540 sqft can fit between 8-10 children.

For most schools this restriction means they can't bring their kids back full time, Even with around 50% of parents opting for remote.

The CDC released updated guidelines in Feb 2021 that recommend a distancing of 6ft between children in the classroom, although giving many options of classroom layout that go lower then that. 6ft between child can be adequately planned in a classroom with 28 sqft per child. We are asking for the DOE to revisit their range to be in line with CDC recommendations and get more of our children back to learning full time. Here is some possible classroom layouts the CDC has suggested could be used to achieve increased density and get more children back in the classroom.

NOTE: private schools in the city are not held to the same 50-65sqft per child and are successfully operating at the 28sqft level - i.e. 6ft between desks.

Background information:

Over last summer the DOE used a consultant IBO to do a survey of space, this was the report as a result. IBO used the annual school space survey submitted by principals in school year 2018-2019 to develop these estimates and calculated that a typical classroom can accommodate 8 children and a specialty classroom can accommodate 10.   Based on the report DOE planning department calculated a range of 50-65 sqft per child social distancing guidelines.
