In 2011 HMRC when petrol cost 129p a litre, HMRC set the mileage rate employers could reimburse employees for the use of their private vehicles whilst in work at 45p a mile without attracting income tax. Petrol has increased in price by 50%since 2011 yet the allowance has not increased. I propose that HMRC increase the amount employers pay employees for use of their private vehicles to reflect the current high price of petrol and diesel. As it is employers who pay this allow this change could be made at no cost to the treasury and would have an immediate impact on those, such as NHS and Social Care staff who have no other option other than to use their own vehicles to support the vital services within this country.
