Why this petition matters

One of the most pressing problems in the Chicago Public School (CPS) system is educational inequity caused by underfunding. Although CPS is the largest school district in Illinois, it is also one of the neediest, as it is 30% underfunded. As of this year, CPS hit 74.6 percent funding adequacy, falling about a quarter short in sufficient funds. At the current rate of funding, however, it would take 20 years for the CPS system and all Illinois school districts to reach full, adequate funding. Despite CPS's current lack of funds, the district recently lost $30 million in expected state funds, another hit to their already insufficient amount of funding.

Underfunding is a serious issue because it creates educational inequity in Illinois school systems. Educational inequity is caused by insufficient resources, ranging from qualified teachers and staff, proper technology, and satisfactory educational opportunities and extracurriculars. The failure to provide these necessary and important resources roots back to inadequate funding, as these resources all cost money. This problem is especially significant in the CPS system, as 72.7 percent of the district's students are considered economically disadvantaged. Additionally, over 80 percent of the student population in the CPS system are black and brown. Sufficient resources are a necessary and vital part of education. It is unfair to prevent students from accessing the resources they need because of inadequate funding.

The Evidence-Based Funding for Student Success Act was passed in August of 2017 to reevaluate the way school funding in Illinois is distributed. Evidence-based funding (EBF) was created with the goal of sending more funding and resources to the most under-resourced students and districts. However, this act is currently being underutilized. The Chicago Teachers Union called for more money to be allocated to EBF, as it would allow CPS and all Illinois school districts to receive the funding and resources they deserve.

Education is incredibly important for students and society, but underfunding schools undermines its effectiveness and value. By providing adequate funding to the CPS system, we can give students the opportunity to receive an equitable education and sufficient educational resources.

Funding for the Chicago Public School system must be increased to provide students with the education, resources, and opportunities they need and deserve!
