Include Marching Bells in the Brecksville Broadview Heights Marching Band

The Issue

I am Lleyton, a freshman who plays vibraphone in the front ensemble of the Brecksville Broadview Heights Marching Band. Since I joined band in 6th grade I always wanted to play mallet instruments. After playing in band for three years, the bells became my favorite instrument. It’s loud outstanding sound made it stick out from the rest of the instruments. While I can play in the front ensemble of the marching band, it disappoints me that I cannot march with the rest due to the lack of marching bells in our band.

Marching bells, also known as glockenspiels, contribute uniquely to the sound of a marching band. They offer a high-pitched, clear tone that cuts through the sound of other instruments, enhancing the overall impact of the band's performance. Besides, an important part of being in a marching band is the march itself - the unity, the discipline, and the spectacle it provides. Missing out on that opportunity simply because of the instrument I cherish is deeply disheartening.

Brecksville Broadview Heights Marching Band has always been known for its inclusivity, diversity, and adaptability. However, the inclusion of marching bells can further enhance our reputation and performance. I am petitioning for this change not just on behalf of myself, but for future students who share the same passion for mallet instruments.

The change may seem small, but for individuals like me, it carries immense significance. By including marching bells in the official marching band instrumentation, we uphold values of musical inclusion and foster a broader representation of instruments. Please support this petition to refine our band's sound and boost the morale of students like me who wish to march with their favored instrument. Sign the petition and let us march to the beat of our own drum - or, in my case, bells.
