Staples soccer head coach, Russ Oost-Lievense, is graduate of Staples High School and a former Captain of the 2007 varsity team. Russ has served as a beloved coach in the program since 2016. In addition to coaching, Russ works as an educator helping children with special needs in Darien, CT.

During his tenure, Russ has been an incredible coach, mentor and friend to both players and parents in the program.  

In response to reports of egregious and harmful bullying by players in the program, Russ took action to rectify the situation. He called a meeting of the Reserves team in the Staples shed on Loeffler Field to discuss the matter. During this meeting, Russ expressed anger, frustration and disapproval. He let it be known that the behavior was unacceptable - and that even those who did not perpetrate the conduct were still responsible as bystanders. This should be no surprise, as this is the messaging the children receive as part of their education in Westport. Russ was particularly upset since the bullying targeted a student with special needs, a group that Russ has devoted his career to support. 

Unfortunately, in response to Russ’ impassioned and firm tone at the meeting, a parent chose to report him instead of reflecting on harmful bullying that triggered this in the first place. As a result, Russ is now on administrative leave and subject to an investigation. This not only hurts Russ — but it hurts the entire team who relies on Russ for support and coaching. They are heartbroken to see their coach treated in this way in the middle of their season. Russ was doing the right thing by reprimanding the kids for bullying their peers. He does not deserve to be accused of wrongdoing in such a public and harmful way. 

We, as members of the Staples Soccer Community (past and present), are petitioning in support of Russ Oost-Lievense. This accusation is inappropriate, harmful and should be retracted immediately.
